General Notes: Written by Catherine Dulany Austin in the 1980s. (Ann Hecathorn's mother)

The fifth child of Joseph and Elvira Crow Henry was recorded as John W. in the Bible. The W was, I believe, for Wesley as Elvira had a brother named John Wesley. Wesley has been retained as a given name in the Crow family throughout the years. Elvira's father was named John as was his father.

John W. Henry was born 2 January 1847, at Shawneetown, Illinois at the time Joseph and Elvira Crow Henry moved from Hopkins County, Kentucky to Illinois. Great Uncle John told me, during a visit with him in 1928, that the family brought three wagons loaded with furniture and provisions when they moved to Illinois from Kentucky.

How I wish I could again visit with Great Uncle John! The questions I would ask! I am certain they chose to come during a time the ground was frozen as it would be easier to haul the loaded wagons over frozen ground than when the roads where muddy. Since Great Grandfather was a farmer, the time to move had to be between the time of fall harvest and the time to put out the spring crop the following year. But why did they choose January when it was so near the time for Great Grandmother to deliver her baby!

I am amazed to think of Elvira undertaking that rough ride in a wagon! I think how cold it must have been for Great Grandmother and the children. The men driving the teams could get off and walk to stimulate their circulation, but for Elvira accompanied by four children -- Nancy age 8; Thomas, age 6; Alzada, age 5; and Martha Amy, age 17 months -- the trip must have been wearing!

I wonder who drove the teams since none of the children were old enough to take this responsibility, and surely Elvira wasn't expected to take on that extra chore! Did some relative make the trip with them? Fifty years ago I never thought to ask. At that time, someone could have told me!

The rough ride and the excitement of crossing the river was just too much! Great Uncle John made his appearance! I am amazed that Great Grandmother Elvira started on the journey! I didn't ask if the family sought help, stayed awhile enroute or any details. I guess I was interested in getting on with the family history. Now I am curious and wish I knew. That would really add interest to the family story! Anyway both Great Uncle John and Great Grandmother survived the ordeal!

The Henry family came first to Williamson County, before permanently settling in Webber Township of Jefferson County.

John W. Henry married Mary E. Robertson. She was our Great Aunt Moll, whom we all delighted in going to visit. She was always a soft spoken, cheerful lady "born in Culpepper County, Virginia." These words rolled when she said them. I can hear her yet!

We usually made the 15 or so mile trip to visit Aunt Moll and Uncle John in the fall, or so it seems to me now. We were always well entertained by their stories of early days and looked forward to a treat of buttermilk to drink -- churned in a stone churn, with a wood dasher; a lump of brown sugar; a big sugar or molasses cookie, or a serving of honey in the comb -- always kept in a large long stemmed clear glass covered compote. Years later I was given a compote which resembled the honey dish belonging to Aunt Moll. When I am fortunate enough to be able to buy honey in the comb, I serve it in my glass compote for old times sake!

Yams, baked in their skins, were often served at their dinner table. The yams were each wrapped in paper and
stored for the winter in a wooden barrel in a warm corner of the room. The barrel was then covered with a clean white sheet and looked much like a draped round table.

Nero was their large shepherd, or perhaps collie dog, which had learned to obey Aunt Moll's command to fetch to her. Aunt Moll never raised her voice when speaking to the dog to give his order to bring something to her.

When Aunt Moll had dinner guests, she "put her best foot forward" as a Virginia born lady would. My sister, Mary Louise Dulany Garner recalled that on one occasion, Aunt Moll related to us that she observed a guest in her home looking critically at the worn spots in her best white tablecloth as Aunt Moll was spreading it on the table. Aunt Moll told her, "Never you mind, there'll be a dish to cover every hole." Aunt Moll related this to us as she was spreading the same cloth on her table when we were her guests.

As long as I can remember, Aunt Moll and Uncle John made their home in a weather-boarded log house near Bluford, Illinois. The house, which faced east, had two large rooms across the front, with other rooms to the rear. Back of the kitchen, extending the length of the kitchen was the narrow pantry in which many goodies were kept including the buttermilk in the churn, or the cream in the churn, with a white cloth tied over the top, waiting until it was at the "right stage" to be churned.

The north room was the all purpose sitting room with a huge fireplace. The kitchen was the south room with south windows which let in the light and warmth in the fall.

There was a long narrow porch across the full length of the house. I remember Uncle John sitting on this porch in a "split bottom cane chair" enjoying the warmth of the autumn sun.

Uncle John preferred to wear hand knitted woolen socks made by Aunt Moll. She used a spinning wheel to spin the thread. This, I believe, was my introduction to a spinning wheel. The process fascinated me.

Along the side of the road near their house were hickory trees. It was fun to pick up these scaley bark hickory nuts. Then Uncle John would crack them for me. There were also wild grapes to gather. We were always pleased when it was time for a visit to the home of my father's uncle and aunt.

Finally came the time when they could no longer live alone. They went to live in the home of their daughter, Georgia Caldonia Henry Pepple (Mrs. Ulysses Pepple) about 4 miles north and 1/2 mile west of Dahlgren, Illinois. In later years Aunt Moll was confined to a wheel chair, but she never lost her zest for living. Aunt Moll and Uncle John were likely buried at Salem Cemetery southeast of Bluford, Illinois.

Miscellaneous notes about Great Uncle John W. and Aunt Moll Henry and their family: Aunt Moll said she had long brown curls when she was a child and wore her hair in that fashion until after her first child was born. She then got "ashamed" of wearing her curls, so she pinned her hair up on her head, "like an old lady
should."

The daughter with whom Uncle John and Aunt Moll lived in later life told me her parents were married at Alton, Illinois. They were married January 7, 1868.

Keeping house on a farm in the early 1940s

Oh yes, women do make the world go 'round!.....some thoughts about those quick re-marriages back then. Seems like most of the population back in those days were farmers, all had (and needed to have) large families to help work the farm. Many women died in childbirth and left husbands, babies and sometimes some other little kids. One person, not a man or a woman either one, could do the farming, the livestock, take care of the house and a bunch of little kids by themselves. I grew up until mom married Roy in my mama's mother's house. They were semi-farmers. Here's how a woman's life on a farm was in the very early 1940's and before that (so you can imagine how much harder it might have been in the 1800's and earlier) - this is how my grandmother Laura Anna Henry kept house - my mom went to work outside until she remarried. Whatever duty grandma was doing, I was expected to participate too. If she was dusting, I got a dustrag too and if she was shelling peas, I got some peas to shell too and etc.

Laundry - clothes were washed once a week - 1. she built a huge fire outside in the yard and put a big copper tub full of water (which she had to draw from the well and carry by bucket over to it). Into that she put lye soap which she had made herself out of ashes and grease 2. The clothes were put in and she scrubbed them between her knuckles. The really dirty ones got put on a washboard. Then they went into another tub of cold water to rinse. Then they went into a starch bath. THEN she had to wring them all out dry as possible and take them and hang them on the clothesline - she did this no matter what the weather was doing even in the snow. In the winter time, the clothes froze on that line before they dried.

Ironing - all those clothes were brought in off the line and dampened and rolled up and put into a bushel basket and covered with a towel or cloth to keep them damp. She didn't have an electric iron - she had 2 heavy irons which she heated on top of the cookstove (heated by wood) or the house heating stove in the winter (heated with wood and coal). While she ironed with one, the other was heating and she always had one that was hot.

Meals - cooked on a wood cookstove that she fired herself all from "scratch", always including cornbread or biscuits and if it was chicken, then she went out and caught it, killed it, plucked it, etc etc until it was a dinner. We went daily to get the eggs that had been laid and we gave the chickens some feed. After the eggs were opened for cooking, she put the egg shells on the back of the always hot wood stove to make them dried and crispy. Then they were crushed and given back to the chickens in their feed. She said it helped to make their new egg shells strong. Vegetables in the winter came out of glass jars that she had canned in that hot steamy kitchen in the summer (no airconditioning), including fruits and jellies and juices. To can these things in the summer, she had go pick them out of the truck garden that she had planted and tended, she had to wash all the jars and lids, rinse and then boil them, prepare bushels of fruits or veges including washing, peeling, chopping or slicing etc and then can them. Lots of times Aunt Martha, my grandma Laura Anna and my mom would spend all day preparing the jars and then doing the canning.

A hog and/or calf was butchered every year for meat. Cows had to be milked for milk and butter churned from the cream.

(Are you tired yet??)

Clothes and bedding - quilts and rugs were hand-made on a nonelectric treddle sewing machine - grandma was "rich" and had such a machine. Otherwise, everything was sewn by hand. The chicken and hog feed came in 50 or 100 pound bags (I don't remember the size, but big) and these were made of cotton, kind of off white in color, thick - I guess it was muslin. Sometimes the bags had pretty flowers and sometimes the name of the feed maker. Grandma made clothes for me out of those bags and she also made dishtowels out of some of them.

Rugs - these were crocheted rugs made from scraps of braided or twisted material that didn't get into a quilt and the worn out heavy black or brown cotton stockings that she and her sister, my Aunt Martha Henry McKinney Jackson wore. The stocking strips and material strips were sewn together to make a long "yarn", rolled into balls and then with a big crochet needle, she crocheted a rug.

Baths every day were "spit baths". Water would be drawn and heated, put into a washpan and we washed all our parts. Once a week at our house a big galvanized tub was put in the kitchen, grandma heated water on the stove until the tub was sufficiently full of warm to hot water and then each person took their turn in the tub beginning with the "cleanest" person in the household. The kids were last as we were the dirtiest.

Bathrooms were 1) chamber pots under the bed for use on those bitterly cold winter nights it was too miserable to go outside or when the weather was too bad to go outside.
2) the outhouse - we had a 2-holer and used a Sears catalogue or some such thing for paper. Then you took a scoop of lime and threw it down the hole when you were finished.

Then in all those families during those times, there were the babies to tend to, church to attend on Sunday, etc. etc. and teaching the kids to read and write or get them ready for school and mom was usually doctor and nurse when somebody was sick unless it was REALLY bad.

Our house had a telephone and a radio but TV hadn't been invented yet. The phone was a "party line" with several other families sharing the one phone line. Each family had their own number of rings to let them know that call is for THEM; however, they all listened to each others' conversations and sometimes the talking parties would have to tell the listening intruders to hang up. When you wanted to talk to somebody you just picked up the phone and a live operator would ask who you wanted to speak to and later on would say "number please" and it was a simple 3 or 4 digit number. Cool huh?

And for FUN my grandma crocheted and embroidered and did tatting lace, whew!

General Notes: Otto Henry was a kindly, retirement-age man and our school janitor at Markham City School in the early 1950s. He and his wife Gertie lived near the school, so he would do his janitor work early and late and not be much present during the school day unless the furnace or a sink needed attention.

But once in awhile, he would come over specifically during recess or lunch time to consult a big pull-down world map we had above the blackboard. He would pull it down and study it intently for the whole break, comparing it to a letter he had in his hands. We speculate now he had a relative overseas (Korea?) and was following locations mentioned in letters against the world map.

He and his wife Gertie in the summertime would hold court on their front porch for all the neighborhood children, mostly preteen, who needed a cool place to visit. All were welcome and on certain days world's best cinnamon rolls would find their way out front and be urged on the youngsters. They always said, 'no thanks,' always relented, and always ate with relish. I oughtta know.

Quality people, sorely missed.
